For me, music has always been the key.
The key to inspire my writing and help generate ideas. The key to celebrating accomplishments. The key to buckling down to hard work. The key to successfully completing unwanted tasks.
And the key to pulling myself up from dark places.
I think I'm finally ready to admit to myself and to others that I battle with depression.
For years I've held this idea that depression has just been a problem I've dealt with a couple of times. But the truth of the matter is, it's an ongoing battle.
When I struggle with things in my life, I have a tendency to get lost in the blackness of depression. I find it easier than most, I think, to get swallowed up by sadness and hurt. I have to fight that darkness every time.
But here's the good news.
I've noticed; as the years go by, and as I successfully beat back the black over and over again; that success comes more easily. I find I can recognize the signs quicker and I can draw on the many coping techniques I've learned through the years, to help me.
And one of of those coping techniques is music. Besides writing, I find it to be one of the best healers. I use music to lift me up and help me find my purpose again.
And it is a MUCH healthier alternative to trying to eat a hole through that dark void.
Once again I am returning to positivity and light. Things WILL get better. I WILL live the life I dream. Listening to music that lifts me up, can help me to remember these things.
All music is useful. Use the music that speaks to you. But here are just a few of the many songs that, over the years, have helped to pull me back into the light.
Come join me there. :)
(I'm not endorsing any of these particular YouTube channels. These are just where I found decent lyric videos.)
By: R. Kelly
In spite of R. Kelly's legal troubles, this song still has the power to make me believe that I can, indeed, "Fly" to a better life.
By: Eminem
Even if rap isn't your favorite kind of music (it isn't mine) you may find it hard not to get caught up in these pulsing rhythm and "pull yourself up" lyrics. This song has a rhythm like a driving train; building in intensity till it plows through the ending. Love it.
(Be warned there are a couple of F-bombs in this one. But only 1 or 2, which for Eminem is a feat!) :P
By: Aerosmith
This rock anthem is a must when you feel the need to rock out and scream. With a message of living your dream because you never know when "the good lord will take you away", it can help to remind us to live in the present and enjoy the parts of our dreams that we've already achieved.
By: Mariah Carrey
This song leans towards the schmaltzy because, well because its sung by Mariah Carey. But I still think the message of finding the hero within ourselves is an important one.
By: Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey
This song has a double Diva whammy! But I LOVE this song. It never fails to bring tears to my eyes and to help me find my faith again. Beautiful song, from a beautiful soundtrack, from a beautiful movie, sung by two very beautiful voices.
